Data transformations and representations for computation and visualization

چکیده
This article is a product of a workshop on the Future of Visual Analytics, held in Washington, DC on 4 March 2009. Workshop attendees included representatives from the visual analytics research community across government, industry and academia. The goal of the workshop, and the resulting article, was to reflect on the first 5 years of the visual analytics enterprise and propose research challenges for the next 5 years. The article incorporates input from workshop attendees as well as from its authors. Abstract At the core of successful visual analytics systems are computational techniques that transform data into concise, human comprehensible visual representations. The general process often requires multiple transformation steps before a final visual representation is generated. This article characterizes the complex raw data to be analyzed and then describes two different sets of transformations and representations. The first set transforms the raw data into more concise representations that improve the performance of sophisticated computational methods. The second transforms internal representations into visual representations that provide the most benefit to an interactive user. The end result is a computing system that enhances an end user's analytic process with effective visual representations and interactive techniques. While progress has been made on improving data transformations and representations, there is substantial room for improvement.

Data Representations and Transformations
To permit visualization, analysis, and reporting, data must be transformed from their original raw state into a form, or representation, that is suitable for manipulation. These data representations and transformations are the foundation on which visual analytics is built. Data representations are structured forms suitable for computer-based transformations. These structures must exist in the o...
متن کاملVolume Modelling: Representations and Advanced Operations
This paper presents our approach to volume modelling which combines volume representations by voxel data and by continuous real functions. We discuss the main differences between direct volume visualization and modelling with voxel data, questions of conversion between two representations including volume reconstruction from contour data. We illustrate the approach by several advanced operation...
متن کاملA new approach for data visualization problem
Data visualization is the process of transforming data, information, and knowledge into visual form, making use of humans’ natural visual capabilities which reveals relationships in data sets that are not evident from the raw data, by using mathematical techniques to reduce the number of dimensions in the data set while preserving the relevant inherent properties. In this paper, we formulated d...
متن کاملA Projected Alternating Least square Approach for Computation of Nonnegative Matrix Factorization
Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) is a common method in data mining that have been used in different applications as a dimension reduction, classification or clustering method. Methods in alternating least square (ALS) approach usually used to solve this non-convex minimization problem. At each step of ALS algorithms two convex least square problems should be solved, which causes high com...
متن کاملAggregations of Elementary Transformations
The techniques of aggregating transformations have been used in the development of blocked algorithms, in particular, the compact representations of aggregated Householder transformation have been wellknown. We show in this paper that the aggregation techniques can be integrated in a framework for aggregating general elementary transformations. The framework consists of three basic compact form...
